Q2 2023 Statistics

Overview

The total number of judgments registered in the British Isles in Q2 2023 was 274,563. This total number excludes England and Wales High Court Judgments, Scotland Ordinary Causes and Northern Ireland High Court Judgments. Comparing the same quarter last year there was a 20% increase. 44,687 judgments were ‘satisfied’ a year-on-year increase of 9%.

97.65% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

The total value of judgments across all jurisdictions in Q2 2023 was £501,880,868, a slight year-on-year increase of 0.06%.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the total value of those judgments registered in England and Wales increased in Q2 2023 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments increased by 21%, from 222,368 in Q2 2022 to 268,109 in Q2 2023. This quarter the total value of judgments stood at £476,990,184 an increase of 7% from the same period last year.

  • Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of business judgments in England and Wales has increased by 9.7%, from 30,411 in Q2 2022 to 33,361 in Q2 2023. The total value of debt also increased slightly by 3.5%, from £109 million in Q2 2022 to £113 million in Q2 2023. However, the average value of debt decreased from, £3,592 to £3,389 a reduction of 5.7%.

  • Corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 23,679 in Q2 2022 to 27,326 in Q2 2023, an increase of 15.4%. The total value of debt against businesses increased slightly by 2.12% year-on-year, from £86.5 million in Q2 2022 to £88 million in Q2 2023. However, the average value of debt decreased by 11.5%, from £3,655 in Q2 2022 to £3,235 in Q2 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a 10.4% decrease from the same period last year, from 6,732 to 6,035. However, the total value of debt for non-corporate judgments increased 8.7%, from £22,687,105 in Q2 2022 compared to £24,665,322 in Q2 2023. The average value of debt also increased from £3,370 to £4,087, an increase of 21.3%.

  • Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 22.3% from 191,974 in Q2 2022 to 234,768 in Q2 2022. The value of debt against consumers also increased by 8.5%, from £335.5 million to £363.9 million. However, the average value of debt against consumers decreased by 11.3%, from £1,748 to £1,550.

SCOTLAND:

Overview:

The number of decrees registered in Scotland has seen a decrease of 16% this quarter from the same period last year, from 4,653 in Q2 2022 to 3,907 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of debt has increased by 14.4% from £6.49 million to £7.4 million. The average value of debt has also increased year- on- year by 36.2%, from £1,395 to £1,901.

  • Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business decrees in Scotland saw a minor decrease of 1.05%, from 1,509 in Q2 2022 to 796 in Q2 2023. The total value of business debt also decreased by 19%, from £1.49 million in Q2 2022 to £1.09 million in Q2 2023. However, the average value of debt saw an increase of 53.54%, from £990 to £1,520.

  • Corporate business debt in Scotland:

The total number of decrees against corporate businesses decreased from 1,421 to 695 year-on-year, a reduction of 51.09%. The total value of debt against corporate businesses also decreased by 24.19%, from £1.3 million in Q2 2022 to £1 million in Q2 2023. However, the average value of debt increased by 55%, from £936 in Q2 2022 to £1,451 in Q2 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:

The number of decrees against non-corporate businesses increase by 14.77% compared to the same period last year, from 88 in Q2 2022 to 101 in Q2 2023. The total value of debt against these businesses increased by 23.09% from £163,638 in Q2 2022 to £201,426 in Q2 2023. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses saw a small increase of 7.25% from £1,860 to £1,994.

  • Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers has decreased by 1.05%, from 3,144 in Q2 2022 to 3,111 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 24.32%, from £5 million in Q2 2022 to £6.2 million in Q2 2023. The average value of consumer debt also rose by 25.64%, from £1,591 in Q2 2022 to £1,999 in Q2 2023.

NORTHERN IRELAND:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in Northern Ireland increased compared to the same period last year. The total value of debt has seen a year-on-year substantial increase also.

The number of judgments increased from 1,097 in Q2 2022 to 1,771 in Q2 2023, an increase of 61.44%. The total value of debt also increased from £2.49 million in Q2 2022 to £3.9 million in Q2 2023, an increase of 60.56%.

  • Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of business judgments in Northern Ireland increased by 227.53%, from 178 in Q2 2022 to 583 in Q2 2023. The total value of business debt also increased from £640,492 in Q2 2022 to £1 million in Q2 2023, an increase of 66.60%. The average value of debt experienced a decrease of 49.13%, from £3,598 in Q2 2022 to £1,830 in Q2 2023.

  • Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 144 in Q2 2022 to 560 in Q2 2023, an increase of 288.89%. The value of debt against corporate businesses also increased by 83.95% from £557,427 in Q2 2022 to £1 million in Q2 2023. However, the average value of corporate debt decreased by 57.70%, from £3,871 in Q2 2022 to £1,831 to Q2 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses decreased by 32.35% compared to the same period last year, from 34 in Q2 2022 to 23 in Q2 2023. The value of debt against these businesses also decreased from £83,065 in Q2 2022 to £41,686 in Q2 2023, a 49.82% reduction. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses also fell by 52.70%, from £3,871 in Q2 2022 to £1,831 in Q2 2023.

  • Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland increased year-on-year by 29.27%, from 919 in Q2 2022 to 1,188 in Q2 2023. The total value of consumer debt increased by 58.40%, from £1.78 million in Q2 2022 to £2.83 million in Q2 2023. The average value of consumer debt also increased by 22.53%, from £1,946 in Q2 2022 to £2,385 in Q2 2023.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland saw an increase of 36.45% from 321 in Q2 2022 to 438 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of debt fell by 72.70%, from €46.79 million in Q2 2022 to €12.77 million Q2 2023. The average value of judgments also decreased by 79.99%, from €145,769 in Q2 2022 to €29,170 in Q2 2023.

  • Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in the Republic of Ireland increased by 49.09%, from 110 in Q2 2022 to 164 in Q2 2023. The total value of business debt has seen a decline of 0.95% from €3.95million in Q2 2022 to €3.93 million in Q2 2023. The average value of business debt also declined by 33.56%, from €35,918 in Q2 2022 to €23,863 in Q2 2023.

  • Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has increased 32.58%, from 89 in Q2 2022 to 118 in Q2 2023. However, the value of debt against these businesses decreased 11.49% from €2.78 million in Q2 2022 to €2.43 million in Q2 2023. The average value of debt also decreased 33.25% from €30,884 in Q2 2022 to €20,616 in Q2 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 119.05% as compared to the same period last year, from 21 in Q2 2022 to 46 in Q2 2023. The value of debt against these businesses also increased from €1.2 million in Q2 2022 to €1.48 million in Q2 2023, an increase of 23.17%. However, the average value of debt against non-corporate businesses decreased by 43.77% from €57,252 in Q2 2022 to €32,192 in Q2 2023.

  • Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 29.86%, from 211 in Q2 2022 to 274 in Q2 2023. However, the value of consumer debt decreased by 79.31% from €42.8 million in Q2 2022 to €8.86 million in Q2 2023. The average value of consumer debt also fell by 84.07% from €203,038 in Q2 2022 to €32,346 in Q2 2023.

JERSEY:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in Jersey saw an increase compared to the same period last year. However, the value of debt saw a decline year-on-year.

The total number of judgments increased, from 266 in Q2 2022 to 286 in Q2 2023, a rise of 7.52%. However, the total value of debt decreased from £639,997 in Q2 2022 to £619,944 in Q1 2023, a reduction of 3.13%.

  • Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey increased by 45.00%, from 20 in Q2 2022 to 29 in Q2 2023. The total value of business debt, declined by 10.46% from £319,683 in Q2 2022 to £286,242 in Q2 2023. The average value of business debt also decreased by 38.25%, from £15,984 in Q2 2022 to £9,870 in Q2 2023.

  • Corporate business debt in Jersey:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased by 40.00%, from 15 in Q2 2022 to 21 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of debt against these businesses fell by 9.21%, from £279,100 in Q2 2022 to £253,387 in Q2 2023. The average value of debt also decreased by 35.15%, from £18,606 in Q2 2022 to £12,066 in Q2 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses increased by 60.00% compared to the same period last year, from 5 in Q2 2022 to 8 in Q2 2023. The total value of debt against these businesses decreased by 19.04%, from £40,583 in Q2 2022 to £32,855 in Q2 2023. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses also decreased by 49.40%, from £8,116 in Q2 2022 to £4,106.88 in Q2 2023.

Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 7.52%, from 246 in Q2 2022 to 257 in Q2 2023. The value of consumer debt increased by 4.18%, from £320,314 in Q2 2022 to £333,702 in Q2 2023. The average value of consumer debt fell by 0.28% from the same period last year, from £1,302 in Q2 2022 to £1,298 in Q2 2023.

ISLE OF MAN:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in the Isle of Man increased as compared to the same period last year. However, the value of debt has decreased year-on-year.

The total number of judgments increased from 39 in Q2 2022 to 52 in Q2 2023, a rise of 33.33%. However, the total value of debt decreased by 63.87%, from £459,820 in Q2 2022 to £166,119 in Q2 2023.

  • Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man increased by 33.33% compared to the same period last year, from 9 in Q2 2022 to 12 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of business debt has seen a decrease of 82.40% as compared to the same period last year, from £336,076 in Q2 2022 to £59,155 in Q2 2023. The average value of business debt also decreased by 86.80%, from £37,341 in Q2 2022 to £4,929 in Q2 2023.

  • Corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses increased by 11.11%, from 9 in Q2 2022 to 10 in Q2 2023. The total value of corporate debt saw a decrease of 84.03%, from £336,076 in Q2 2022 to £53,669 in Q2 2023. The average value of corporate debt also experienced a decrease of 85.63%, from £37,341 in Q2 2022 to £5,366 in Q1 2023.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has increased from 0 judgments in Q2 2022 to 2 in Q2 2023. The total value of debt against these businesses also increased from £0 in Q2 2022 to £5,486 in Q1 2023. The average value of non-corporate debt also experienced a rise from £0 in Q2 2022 to £2,743 in Q2 2023.

Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers increased by 33.33%, from 30 in Q2 2022 to 40 in Q2 2023. However, the total value of consumer debt saw a reduction of 13.56%, from £123,744 in Q2 2022 to £106,964 in Q2 2023. The average value of consumer debt also saw a decrease of 35.17%, from £4,124 in Q2 2022 to £2,674 in Q2 2023.
