More Than Just Numbers: The Diverse Role of a Finance Director:
A few weeks ago, my daughter joined Registry Trust for work experience. It was during this period that her inquisitive mind asked several questions about my role as a Finance Director. My daughter came to the conclusion that the role is so much more than finance and was surprised about the diversity of the role. This is what inspired me to write this blog.
As a Finance Director at Registry Trust, my role extends far beyond the traditional realms of balance sheets and income statements. While financial stewardship and governance are at the core of what I do, the scope of my responsibilities often encompasses a broad array of projects that drive the overall success and sustainability of the non-profit organisation. Here’s a closer look at the diverse projects that I’ve been involved in over the last six months, illustrating the dynamic nature of the role.
1.Campaigning for Better Public Data
Accurate and transparent public data is the cornerstone of informed decision-making. As Finance Director, part of my role involves working alongside Executive Team colleagues on Registry Trust campaigns, advocating for improved access to public court data. The most recent campaign drive is to include claimant data within County Court Judgments. This involves collaborating with governmental agencies (HMCTS), lobbying MPs for legislative changes, and working with other stakeholders in the credit industry to promote data transparency. Better public data not only enhances accountability but also empowers the public and stakeholders to make more informed decisions which will ultimately contribute to an improved economic environment with better outcomes.
- Leading Successful Office Move Project
Office relocation can be a complex project that requires meticulous planning and execution. At the back end of 2023, it was my objective to move Registry Trust from a three-floor office building in Fitzrovia (the area had been home since 1985) to a suitable office that is more sustainable (EPC rating of B or above), compact in size, yet adaptable to allow for flexible hybrid working patterns. I formed a project group representing key departments of the business to drive a successful office move project that had a hard stop deadline of 30th April 2024 due to the lease ending. I led the team to ensure that we not only found the optimal location and ideal building, but we found it with minimal disruption to operations, and huge input from the systems team creating a seamless technological transition. The project involved strategic planning, budget management, supplier negotiations, dilapidation encounters, and a fully motivated project team working in tune. This well-executed move is positively reflected in Registry Trust as employee morale has increased along with enhanced productivity and cost-saving opportunities making it a critical initiative for organisational success
- Driving Financial Improvements
Continuous financial improvement is essential for any organisation’s growth and sustainability. My role involves identifying areas for cost reduction, revenue enhancement, and process optimisation. Through detailed financial analysis the implementation of best practices and a revised chart of accounts, I have successfully improved financial performance, driving budget responsibility awareness, and operational efficiency. This includes everything from procurement strategies and managing supplier contracts, to sourcing new financial software.
- Crafting Financial Strategy: Forecasting and Five-Year Plans
Strategic financial planning is pivotal for long-term success. I am passionately involved in crafting financial forecasts and five-year plans, aligning them with the organisation's strategic goals and making sure that budget holders play a huge part in the process. This involves analysing market trends, assessing risks, and developing comprehensive financial models to share with both my executive colleagues and board members. These plans serve as a roadmap, guiding the organisation through various economic cycles and ensuring sustained growth and stability in a challenging marketplace.
- Treasury Management
Effective treasury management is crucial for maintaining liquidity, optimising cash flow, and managing financial risks. My responsibilities include overseeing the organisation's investment strategies, managing debt, and ensuring sufficient liquidity for operational needs. Through prudent treasury management, I ensure that the organisation can meet its short-term obligations while strategically positioning itself for long-term opportunities.
- Risk Analysis and Management
Risk analysis is an integral part of my role. This involves identifying potential financial risks, evaluating their impact, and developing mitigation strategies. Whether it’s market volatility, credit risk, supplier risk, or operational risk, a proactive approach to risk management helps safeguard the organisation’s financial health and reputation. Implementing robust risk management frameworks ensures that the organisation is resilient and prepared to navigate uncertainties.
Conclusion
The role of Finance Director at Registry Trust is multifaceted, encompassing a variety of projects that extend well beyond traditional financial management. From advocating for better public data and managing complex office relocations to driving financial improvements, crafting strategic plans, overseeing treasury operations, and conducting risk analysis, each project contributes to the organisation's overall success. By embracing this diverse set of responsibilities, I can drive impactful change, foster financial health, and support the strategic objectives of the organisation. The dynamic nature of the Finance Director’s role ensures that each day brings new challenges and opportunities, making it a truly rewarding career path.
Can I see my daughter working in finance, maybe not, as her skills very much sit within the political arena, but I know that her time at Registry Trust gave a full picture of how a job title doesn’t always give a full picture of the organisational impact that one role can have.
