There were 229,580 new judgments processed in Q2 2022 across all jurisdictions, with a total value of £840,199,311.

The total number of ‘satisfied’ (or fully paid) judgments in this quarter was 44,896.

Compared to same period last year, the total number of judgments increased in this quarter from 213,587 to 229,580, an increase of 7.3%. However, the number of satisfied judgments has decreased year-on-year by 6%.

The total number of judgments processed half-yearly was 459,819 with a total value of £1,372,222,919.

The total number of satisfied judgments half-yearly was 92,684.

97% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

ENGLAND AND WALES

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in England and Wales increased in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year. The total value of debt has also seen an increase year-on-year.

The total number of judgments rose from 207,976 in Q2 2021 to 222,490 in Q2 2022, an increase of 7%. The value of debt increased by 84% year-on-year, from £418 million in Q2 2021 to £ 770 million in Q2 2022.

The number of satisfied judgments fell by 7%, from 47,817 in Q1 2022 to 44,513 in Q2 2022.

Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of business judgments in England and Wales has increased by 52%, from 20,066 in Q2 2021 to 30,468 in Q2 2022.

The value of business judgments also rose by 181% year-on-year, from £94.5 million in Q2 2021 to £265.8 million in Q2 2022.

The average value of judgments against businesses has increased by 85% year-on-year.

The total number of judgments against incorporated businesses increased from 15,078 to 23,728 year-on-year, an increase of 57%. The value of debt against these businesses also rose by 128%, from £78.5 million in Q2 2021 to £179.6 million in Q2 2022. The average value of debt rose by 45% year-on year, from £5,209.08 in Q2 2021 to £7,567.98 in Q2 2022.

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 35% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 4,988 to 6,740. The value of debt against these businesses has increased from £16 million to £86 million year-on-year, an increase of 438%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses in England and Wales has seen a 298% increase in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in England and Wales has increased by 2%, from 187,910 in Q2 2021 to 192,022 in Q2 2022. The value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 55% year-on-year, from £324 million in Q2 2021 to £504 million in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt rose by 52% year-on-year, from £1,726.25 to £2,627.47.

SCOTLAND

Overview:

The number of decrees and the value of debt registered in Scotland have seen an increase in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of decrees increased from 4,356 in Q2 2021 to 5,351 in Q2 2022, an increase of 23%. The value of debt has also increased year-on-year, from £13.5 million in Q2 2021 to £18.1 million in Q2 2022, an increase of 34%.

There has been a decrease in the number of satisfied judgments year-on-year from 285 to 209, a decrease of 27%.

Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business judgments in Scotland has dramatically increased by 370%, from 365 in Q2 2021 to 1,719 in Q2 2022.

The value of business judgments also rose by 301% year-on-year, from £1.3 million in Q2 2021 to £5.4 million in Q2 2022. However, if we compare with the previous quarter, there has been a decrease in the value of business debt by 33%, from £8 million in Q1 2022 to £5.4 million in Q2 2022.

The average value of debt against Scottish businesses has decreased by 15% year-on-year.

The total number of judgments against incorporated businesses increased from 312 to 1,584 year-on-year, a drastic increase of 407%. The value of debt against those businesses also rose by 294%, from £1.1 million in Q2 2021 to £4.7 million in Q2 2022. However, the average value of debt fell by 22%, from £3,832.81 in Q2 2021 to £2,975.04 in Q2 2022.

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 154% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 53 to 135. The value of debt against these businesses has increased from £159,634 to £730,649 year-on-year, an increase of 357%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate Scottish businesses have seen an 80% increase in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers has decreased by 9%, from 3,991 in Q2 2021 to 3,632 in Q2 2022. However, the value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 5% year-on-year, from £12.1 million in Q2 2021 to £12.7 million in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt rose by 15% year-on-year, from £3,043.89 to £3,502.11.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Northern Ireland increased in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The number of judgments rose from 823 in Q2 2021 to 1,113 in Q2 2022, an increase of 35%. The value of debt has also increased year-on-year, from £1.91 million in Q2 2021 to £3.79 million in Q2 2022, an increase of 98%.

The number of satisfied judgments has seen an increase of 153% year-on-year, from 39 to 99.

Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of business judgments in Northern Ireland has increased by 54%, from 117 in Q2 2021 to 180 in Q2 2022.

The value of business debt has also seen a rise in this quarter, from £284,721 in Q2 2021 to £748,179 in Q2 2022, an increase of 163%.

The average value of business debt has increased by 71% year-on-year.

The total number of judgments against incorporated businesses increased from 93 to 146 year-on-year, an increase of 57%. The value of debt against those businesses also rose by 162%, from £254,021 in Q2 2021 to £665,114 in Q2 2022. The average value of debt rose by 67% year-on year, from £2731.41 in Q2 2021 to £4555.58 in Q2 2022.

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 42% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 24 to 34. The value of debt against these businesses has increased from £30,700 to £83,065 year-on-year, an increase of 170%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses have seen an 91% increase in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland has increased by 32% from 706 in Q2 2021 to 933 in Q2 2022. The value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 85% year-on-year, from £1.63 million in Q2 2021 to £3.03 million in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt rose by 41% year-on-year, from £2,302.60 to £3,256.96.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in Republic of Ireland decreased in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year. However, the value of debt has seen an increase year-on-year.

The total number of judgments fell from 431 in Q2 2021 to 321 in Q2 2022, a decrease of 26%. But, the value of debt has increased year-on-year, from €31.7 million in Q2 2021 to €46.8 million in Q2 2022, an increase of 48%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been a slight decrease of 2.8% year-on-year, from 35 to 34.

Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in Republic of Ireland has decreased by 11%, from 124 in Q2 2021 to 110 in Q2 2022.

However, the value of business debt has seen an increase of 182% as compared to the same period last year, from €1.4 million to €3.95 million. But, if we compare against the previous quarter, there has been a decrease in the value of business debt by 20%, from €4.9 million in Q1 2022 to €3.95 in Q2 2022.

The average value of business debt has increased by 218% year-on-year, from €11,297 to €35,917.

The total number of judgments against incorporated businesses has decreased by 17% year-on-year, from 107 to 89. The value of debt against those businesses has increased by 139%, from €1.15 million in Q2 2021 to €2.75 million in Q2 2022. The average value of debt also rose drastically by 187% year-on-year, from €10,764 to €30,884.

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 24% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 17 to 21. The value of debt against these businesses has increased from €249,076 to €1.20 million year-on-year, an increase of 382%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses have seen an 291% increase in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has decreased by 31%, from 307 in Q2 2021 to 211 in Q2 2022. However, the value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 41.5% year-on-year, from €30.3 million in Q2 2021 to €42.9 million in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt rose by 105% year-on-year, from €98,780 to €203,038.

JERSEY

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Jersey increased in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments rose from 230 in Q2 2021 to 266 in Q2 2022, an increase of 16%. The value of debt has also increased year-on-year, from £496,929 in Q2 2021 to £639,997 in Q2 2022, a rise of 29%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been a decrease of 31% year-on-year, from 13 to 9.

Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey has decreased by 35%, from 31 in Q2 2021 to 20 in Q2 2022.

However, the total value of business debt has seen an increase of 162% as compared to the same period last year, from £122,097 to £319,683.

The average value of business debt has increased by 305% year-on-year.

The total number of judgments against incorporated businesses has decreased by 37% year-on-year, from 24 to 15. The value of debt against those businesses, however, has increased by 146%, from £113,443 in Q2 2021 to £279,100 in Q2 2022. The average value of debt rose drastically by 293% year-on-year, from £4726.79 to £18,606.67.

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has decreased from 7 to 5 in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year. The value of debt against these businesses, on the other hand, has increased by 368% year-on-year, from £8,654 to £40,583 year-on-year. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses have seen an 556% increase, from £1,236.29 in Q2 2021 to £8,116.60 in Q2 2022.

Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has increased by 24%, from 199 in Q2 2021 to 246 in Q2 2022. But, the value of consumer debt decreased by 15% year-on-year, from £374,832 in Q2 2021 to £320,314 in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt fell by 31% year-on-year, from £1,883.58 to £1,302.09.

ISLE OF MAN

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in the Isle of Man has seen a decrease in Q2 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments fell from 41 in Q2 2021 to 39 in Q2 2022, a decrease of 5%. The value of debt has also decreased year-on-year, from £1.07 million in Q2 2021 to £459,820 in Q2 2022, a fall of 57%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been a decrease of 41% year-on-year, from 54 to 32.

Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man has increased by 28%, from 7 in Q2 2021 to 9 in Q2 2022.

The total value of business debt has seen an increase of 332% as compared to the same period last year, from £77,656 to £336,076.

The average value of business debt has increased by 237% year-on-year, from £11,093.71 in Q2 2021 to £37,341.78 in Q2 2022.

Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has decreased by 12%, from 34 in Q2 2021 to 30 in Q2 2022. The value of consumer debt decreased by 87% year-on-year, from £994,913 in Q2 2021 to £123,744 in Q2 2022. The average value of consumer debt fell by 86% year-on-year, from £29,262.15 to £4,124.80.
