Q3 2022 Statistics

Overview

There were 226,943 new judgments processed in Q3 2022 across all jurisdictions, with a total value of £500,069,017.

The total number of ‘satisfied’ (or fully paid) judgments in this quarter was 49,513.

Compared to same period last year, the total number of judgments decreased in this quarter from 274,557 to 226,943, a decrease of 17.3%. The number of satisfied judgments has increased year-on-year by 25%.

96.7% of all judgments processed were from the England and Wales jurisdiction.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

Overview:

The number of judgments registered in England and Wales decreased in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year. The total value of debt has also seen a decline year-on-year.

The total number of judgments fell from 269,087 in Q3 2021 to 219,540 in Q3 2022, a decrease of 18%. The total value of debt decreased by 19% year-on-year, from £573 million in Q3 2021 to £465 million in Q3 2022.

The number of satisfied judgments increased by 25%, from 39,320 in Q3 2021 to 49,142 in Q3 2022.

Commercial judgments in England and Wales:

The number of business judgments in England and Wales has decreased by 5%, from 27,156 in Q3 2021 to 25,836 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt also fell by 31% year-on-year, from £159 million in Q3 2021 to £110 million in Q3 2022.

The average value of business debt decreased by 28% year-on-year, from £5,889.10 in Q3 2021 to £4,261.93 in Q3 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses decreased from 20,637 to 19,123 year-on-year, a decrease of 7%. The total value of debt against these businesses also fell by 34%, from £137 million in Q3 2021 to £90 million in Q3 2022. The average value of debt fell by 29% year-on year, from £6,664.12 in Q3 2021 to £4,739.30 in Q3 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in England and Wales:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 3% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 6,519 to 6,713. However, the total value of debt against these businesses has decreased from £22 million to £19 million year-on-year, a decrease of 14%. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses in England and Wales has seen a 16% decline in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year, from £3,435.63 to £2,902.08.

Consumer judgments in England and Wales:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in England and Wales has decreased by 20%, from 241,931 in Q3 2021 to 193,704 in Q3 2022. The total value of consumer debt has seen a decrease of 14% year-on-year, from £413 million in Q3 2021 to £355 million in Q3 2022. However, the average value of consumer debt rose by 7% year-on-year, from £1,707.91 to £1,833.38.

SCOTLAND:

Overview:

The number of decrees and the total value of debt registered in Scotland have seen an increase in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of decrees increased from 4,010 in Q3 2021 to 5,463 in Q3 2022, an increase of 36%. The value of debt has also increased year-on-year, from £14 million in Q3 2021 to £15 million in Q3 2022, an increase of 7%.

There has been an increase in the number of satisfied judgments year-on-year, from 206 to 216, an increase of 5%.

Commercial judgments in Scotland:

The number of business judgments in Scotland has dramatically increased by 237%, from 523 in Q3 2021 to 1,760 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt also rose by 56% year-on-year, from £2.5 million in Q3 2021 to £3.89 million in Q3 2022. However, comparison with the previous quarter shows that there has been a decrease in the value of business debt by 30% this quarter.

The average value of debt against Scottish businesses has decreased by 54% year-on-year, from £4,851 in Q3 2021 to £2,215 in Q3 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Scotland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses increased from 447 to 1,601 year-on-year, a dramatic increase of 258%. The total value of debt against those businesses also rose by 53%, from £2.02 million in Q3 2021 to £3.09 million in Q3 2022. However, the average value of debt fell by 57%, from £4,530 in Q3 2021 to £1,936 in Q3 2022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Scotland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 109% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 76 to 159. The total value of debt against these businesses has increased from £512,047 to £798,260 year-on-year, an increase of 56%. However, the average value of debt against the non-corporate Scottish businesses has seen a 25% decrease in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year, from £6,737 to £5,021.

Consumer judgments in Scotland:

The total number of decrees registered against Scottish consumers has increased by 6%, from 3,487 in Q3 2021 to 3,703 in Q3 2022. However, the value of consumer debt has seen a decrease of 1.75% year-on-year, from £11.4 million in Q3 2021 to £11.2 million in Q3 2022. The average value of consumer debt fell by 8% year-on-year, from £3,280 to £3,026.

NORTHERN IRELAND:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Northern Ireland increased in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The number of judgments rose from 871 in Q3 2021 to 1,259 in Q2 2022, an increase of 45%. The total value of debt has also increased year-on-year, from £3.25 million in Q3 2021 to £3.9 million in Q3 2022, an increase of 20%.

The number of satisfied judgments has seen an increase of 95% year-on-year, from 40 to 78.

Commercial judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of business judgments in Northern Ireland has increased by 92%, from 117 in Q3 2021 to 224 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt has also seen a rise in this quarter, from £554,524 in Q3 2021 to £1.06 million in Q3 2022, an increase of 92%.

The average value of business debt has seen a minimal increase of 0.02% year-on-year, from £4,740 to £4,741.

  • Corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has dramatically increased by 120% year-on-year, from 90 in Q3 2021 to 198 in Q3 2022. The value of debt against those businesses also rose by 104%, from £487,125 in Q3 2021 to £994,412 in Q3 2022. The average value of debt rose by 7% year-on year, from £5,413 to £5,022.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen a fall of 4% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 27 to 26. The value of debt against these businesses had a minimal increase of 0.37% year-on-year, from £67,399 to £67,648. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses has seen a 4.2% increase in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year, from £2,496 to £2,602.

Consumer judgments in Northern Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers in Northern Ireland has increased by 37% from 754 in Q3 2021 to 1,035 in Q3 2022. The total value of consumer debt has seen an increase of 4% year-on-year, from £2.695 million in Q3 2021 to £2.821 million in Q3 2022. The average value of consumer debt fell by 24% year-on-year, from £3,575 to £2,726.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments registered in Republic of Ireland and the total value of debt has decreased in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments fell from 370 in Q3 2021 to 349 in Q3 2022, a decrease of 6%. The total value of debt has also decreased year-on-year, from €19.4 million in Q3 2021 to €14.6 million in Q2 2022, a decrease of 25%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been a decrease of 29% year-on-year, from 35 to 25.

Commercial judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The number of business judgments registered in Republic of Ireland has decreased by 17%, from 137 in Q3 2021 to 114 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt has also seen a decline of 48% year-on-year, from €3.7 million to €1.94 million.

The average value of business debt fell by 36% year-on-year, from €26,740 to €17,058.

  • Corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has decreased by 25% year-on-year, from 110 to 83. The value of debt against those businesses minimally declined by 0.12% this quarter, from €1.673 million in Q3 2021 to €1.671 million in Q3 2022. Alternatively, the average value of debt increased by 32% year-on-year, from €15,211 to €20,134.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Republic of Ireland:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has seen an increase of 15% in this quarter as compared to the same period last year, from 27 to 31. The value of debt against these businesses has decreased from €1.99 million to €273,492 year-on-year, a decrease of 86%. The average value of debt against non-corporate businesses has seen a fall of 88% year-on-year, from €73,707 in Q3 2021 to €8,822 in Q3 2022.

Consumer judgments in Republic of Ireland:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has increased by 0.85%, from 233 in Q3 2021 to 235 in Q3 2022. However, the value of consumer debt has seen a decrease of 20% year-on-year, from €15.8 million in Q3 2021 to €12.6 million in Q3 2022. The average value of consumer debt also fell by 21% year-on-year, from €67,675 to €53,773.

JERSEY:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in Jersey increased in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments rose from 191 in Q3 2021 to 230 in Q3 2022, an increase of 20%. The total value of debt dramatically increased year-on-year, from £336,329 in Q3 2021 to £963,101 in Q3 2022, a rise of 186%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been a decrease of 64% year-on-year, from 14 to 5.

Commercial judgments in Jersey:

The number of business judgments registered in Jersey has dramatically increased by 238%, from 13 in Q3 2021 to 44 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt has also seen a significant increase of 337% as compared to the same period last year, from £93,401 to £408,110.

The average value of business debt has increased by 29% year-on-year, from £7,185 to £9,275.

  • Corporate business debt in Jersey:

The total number of judgments against corporate businesses has increased by 200% year-on-year, from 9 to 27. The total value of debt against those businesses also rose by 260%, from £86,351 in Q3 2021 to £310,943 in Q3 2022. The average value of debt increased by 20% year-on-year, from £9,595 to £11,516.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Jersey:

The number of judgments against non-corporate businesses has increased from 4 to 17 in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year. The total value of debt against these businesses has increased by 1278% year-on-year, from £7,050 to £97,167 year-on-year. The average value of debt against the non-corporate businesses has seen a 224% increase, from £1,763 in Q3 2021 to £5,716 in Q3 2022.

Consumer judgments in Jersey:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has increased by 4.5%, from 178 in Q3 2021 to 186 in Q3 2022. The value of consumer debt increased dramatically by 128% year-on-year, from £242,928 in Q3 2021 to £554,991 in Q3 2022. The average value of consumer debt increased by 119% year-on-year, from £1,365 to £2,984.

ISLE OF MAN:

Overview:

Both the number of judgments and the value of debt registered in the Isle of Man have seen an increase in Q3 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of judgments rose from 28 in Q3 2021 to 102 in Q3 2022, an increase of 264%. The total value of debt also increased year-on-year, from £72,228 in Q3 2021 to £295,527 in Q3 2022, a rise of 309%.

In terms of the number of satisfied judgments, there has been an increase of 52% year-on-year, from 31 to 47.

Commercial judgments in the Isle of Man:

The number of business judgments registered in the Isle of Man has increased by 183%, from 6 in Q3 2021 to 17 in Q3 2022.

The total value of business debt has seen an increase of 345% as compared to the same period last year, from £16,266 to £72,428.

The average value of business debt has increased by 57% year-on-year, from £2,711 in Q3 2021 to £4,260 in Q3 2022.

  • Corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against corporate businesses has increased by 140%, from 5 in Q3 2021 to 12 in Q3 2022. The total value of business debt has seen an increase of 317% as compared to the same period last year, from £10,589 to £44,114. However, as compared to the previous quarter, the value of corporate debt has fallen by 87%. The average value of corporate debt increased by 74% year-on-year, from £2,118 to £3,676.

  • Non-corporate business debt in Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against non-corporate businesses has increased from 1 in Q3 2021 to 5 in Q3 2022. The total value of debt against these businesses has seen an increase of 399% as compared to the same period last year, from £5,677 to £28,314. However, the average value of non-corporate debt decreased by 0.25% year-on-year, from £5,677 to £5,663.

Consumer judgments in the Isle of Man:

The total number of judgments registered against consumers has increased by 286%, from 22 in Q3 2021 to 85 in Q3 2022. The total value of consumer debt also rose significantly by 299% year-on-year, from £55,962 in Q3 2021 to £223,099 in Q3 2022. The average value of consumer debt increased by 3.18% year-on-year, from £2,544 to £2,625.
